What are Keyloggers
............................................................................................................

A keylogger is a type of surveillance software (considered to be either software or spyware) that has the capability to record every keystroke you make to a log file, usually encrypted.

A keylogger also know as keystroke logger is software or hardware device which monitors each and every key typed by you on your keyboard.

You can not identify the presence of keylogger on your computer since it runs in background and also it is not listed in task manager or control panel.

It can be used by parents to keep eye on their childrens or company owner to spy on their employes.

An early keylogger was written by Perry Kivolowitz and posted to the Usenet news group net.unix-wizards,net.sources on November 17, 1983.

The posting seems to be a motivating factor in restricting access to /dev/kmem on Unix systems. The user-mode program operated by locating and dumping character lists (clists) as they were assembled in the Unix kernel.

How they can Harm us

A keylogger recorder can record instant messages, e-mail, and any information you type at any time using your keyboard. The log file created by the keylogger can then be sent to a specified receiver.

Some keylogger programs will also record any e-mail addresses you use and Web site URLs you visit.

keyloggers can also be embedded in spyware allowing your information to be transmitted to an unknown third party.

  • Example: You login in to your Facebook account from a computer in which keylogger is install then your username and password will be captured.

Types of Keyloggers
............................................................................................................

There are two types of keylogger Hardware keylogger and Software keylogger

Software Keylogger are software programs designed to work on the target computer’s operating system. There are five categories:

  • Hypervisor-based
  • Kernel-based
  • API-based
  • Form grabbing based
  • Memory injection based
  • Packet analyzers

Hardware-based keyloggers do not depend upon any software being installed as they exist at a hardware level in a computer system

  • Firmware-based
  • Keyboard hardware
  • Wireless keyboard sniffers
  • Keyboard overlays
  • Acoustic keyloggers
  • Electromagnetic emissions
  • Optical surveillance
  • Physical evidence
